Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka

Written by : Jose Alvarado Sandoval ( Dj Malanga )

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has become the world's highest-paid female athlete, making US$37.4 million  in the past one year, for an earnings record, Forbes magazine reported on Friday (May 22).
The 22-year-old Asian star, a two-time Grand Slam champion, edged US rival Serena Williams by US$1.4 million in prize money and endorsement income over the past year.
Both shattered the old single-year earnings mark of US$29.7 million set in 2015 by Russia's Maria Sharapova, who retired in February with five Grand Slam titles, including a career Slam.
"To those outside the tennis world, Osaka is a relatively fresh face with a great back story," University of Southern California sports business professor David Carter told Forbes.
"Combine that with being youthful and bicultural - two attributes that help her resonate with younger, global audiences - and the result is the emergence of a global sports marketing icon."
Osaka, whose father was born in Haiti and whose mother is Japanese, ranks 29th on the 2020 Forbes list of the world's 100 top-paid athletes, four spots ahead of Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles.
The complete list, due to be released next week, has not featured two women since 2016, according to the magazine.
Williams, 38, had been the world's highest-paid female athlete in each of the past four years. Sharapova ruled for the five years before that.
Williams had annual incomes from US$18 million to US$29 million and has collected nearly US$300 million, much of it in endorsement deals.
Osaka won back-to-back Grand Slam titles at the 2018 US Open and 2019 Australian Open, her controversial and historic victory over Williams in the Flushing Meadows final the first Slam singles crown for a Japanese woman.
Osaka was a popular endorsement figure in Japan ahead of the now-postponed Tokyo Olympics and figures to remain a sponsorship dream through next year's rescheduled Games.
Nike signed a apparel deal with Osaka last year that paid her US$10 million in the past year and runs through 2025. Other endorsement deals include Nissan and Yonex racquets.

2021 'last option' for Tokyo Games, says Olympics chief Thomas Bach

Written by : Jose Alvarado S. ( Dj Malanga )

Olympics chief Thomas Bach said 2021 was the "last option" to hold the delayed Tokyo Games on Thursday (May 21), stressing that the postponement cannot continue forever.

Bach told the BBC that he agreed with Japan's stance that the Games will have to be canceled if the coronavirus pandemic is not under control for next year.

In March, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were postponed until July 23, 2021 when the coronavirus spread across the world, killing hundreds of thousands of people and making international sport impossible.

"Frankly, I understand a little bit (Japan's position) because you cannot employ 3,000 or 5,000 people forever on an organizing committee," said the president of the International Olympic Committee.

"You can't change the entire sports calendar worldwide for the major federations every year."

"You cannot have athletes in uncertainty, you cannot overlap too much with the future Olympics."

The Olympics have never been canceled outside of world wars, but Japanese officials have made clear that they have no intention of postponing the Games again beyond next year.

NFL set to lose $7.7 billion if stadiums are empty

Written by: Jose Alvarado S, ( Dj Malanga )

NFL teams stand to lose a combined $5.5 billion (S$7.7 billion) in stadium revenue if the 2020 campaign is played without any spectators, according to a Forbes magazine estimate.

The magazine, which annually values each NFL club, said the amount teams would lose with no spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic equals 38 percent of total NFL revenue from the 2018 season, the latest from which figures are available.

That includes lost revenue from ticket sales, parking, sponsors, food and drinks and souvenir sales.

Itis uncertain whether or not fans will be able to attend 2020 NFL games, with state shutdown regulations against large crowds and possible medical advances likely to impact such plans.

The league announced its 2020 schedule earlier this month. It opens September 10 when the Houston Texans visit the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Players would also take a hit as well as club owners, since they are set to receive 47 percent of football-related income under a collective bargaining agreement reached in March.

The absence of spectators would hit some teams harder than others, but none more than the Dallas Cowboys, who would lose US$621 million in stadium income - more than the total revenue of any other NFL franchise and a huge chunk of their US$950 million total revenue

New England Patriots would lose US$315 million from total revenues of US$600 million while the New York Giants ranked third at US$262 million lost from US$519 million in total revenue.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 24th of 31 teams on the list with US$119 million in lost revenue from a US$400 million total, would expect a major jump in ticket sales and associated income after signing six-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Tom Brady.

And the two bottom teams on the list, the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders, are set to move into new stadiums with vast boosts in ticket sales and associated income to be expected from the venue switches.

The Raiders figures would show US$77 million in lost revenue from a league-low US$357 million total, but those figures came in Oakland while the team is set to play in a brand new 65,000-seat, US$1.8 billion stadium in Las Vegas in 2020.

The Chargers, second-worst in the report with US$93 million in lost revenue from a US$375 million total, are set to move from a smaller venue into a new US$5 billion stadium with 70,000 seats for regular NFL games.

The Los Angeles Rams, set to drop US$121 million off total revenue of US$401 million, would also make the move into the new stadium.

World Water Sports Championship, postponed until 2022

Written by : Jose Alvarado S. ( Dj Malanga )

The International Swimming Federation has announced that next year's World Aquatics Championship has been postponed from 2021 to 2022.

The event in Fukuoka, Japan will now take place between May 13-29, 2022, originally scheduled for July 16-Aug. 1 of next year.

The decision follows the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After establishing contacts with relevant stakeholders and receiving comments from them, we have no doubt that the decision taken will provide the best possible conditions for all participants in the championships, "said FINA President Julio Maglione.

In a time of unprecedented uncertainty, FINA hopes that the announcement of these dates will allow some clarity in planning for all concerned.

The change after consulting with broadcasters, athletes and national federations follows similar movements in athletics and soccer for the world championships in Oregon and the European Women's Championship in England.

Soichiro Takashima, the mayor of Fukuoka, says there will be no reduction in the competition schedule.

"Of course, due to lingering fears of COVID-19 here in Fukuoka city, we still cannot let our guard down," he said.

"However, we will continue to do our utmost to eliminate COVID-19 as soon as possible to meet the expectations of many athletes and sports fans who long for the opening of our championships and make the event a huge success."

The swimming corps confirmed that its World Masters Championship will also take place on Kyushu Island from May 31 to June 9, 2022.

Formula One: Britain's Silverstone 'to stage two grands prix'

Written by : Jose Alvarado S. ( Dj Malanga )

Britain's Silverstone racetrack will stage two grands prix during the Formula One season, subject to UK government approval, circuit chiefs said on Friday.
The COVID-19 outbreak has caused huge disruption to the F1 calendar, with 10 races either cancelled or postponed.
Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle told the BBC that an agreement in principle had been reached with Formula One to hold the races at the central England circuit, immediately after the season begins in Austria.
I am delighted to confirm that Silverstone and Formula One have reached an agreement in principle to host two races behind closed doors this summer," he said.
"However these races will be subject to government approval, as our priority is the safety of all involved and strict compliance with COVID-19 regulations.
"I would like to thank all our fans who have been so supportive throughout this and to assure them we are determined to do all we can to help Formula One put on a show this summer."
The BBC reported that the agreement would hinge on the government giving dispensation over quarantine restrictions.
The government's coronavirus recovery strategy document sets out an intention to introduce a 14-day quarantine rule for international arrivals, except those from Ireland and France.
Organisers are hoping to start the season with the Austrian Grand Prix on July 5 behind closed doors, followed by a second race at the Red Bull Ring a week later.

Michael Jordan case: When it comes to judging to sell, the human mind has no memory.

Written by: Jose Alvarado Sandoval ( Dj Malanga )

Without being an advocate of the devil, nor a prosecutor of God, what concerns me as a writer is to value, express, describe, analyze, always with the truth, the sports side of any athlete, athlete, person close to the world of sports, for their performance, for the game displayed, the kindness with the public, their behavior and respect against rivals, before, during and after the end of the match and their individual and collective level for the benefit of their team.

The Jordan thing is a subject, in which I don't intend to get involved, because I don't like circuses and injustices.

As a player, he is a crack, a player full of talent, perseverance, struggle, commitment and professionalism.

As a person, you can have your ups and downs, like any human being in this world, do not forget us, Jordan, you are also prone to making mistakes, like any other human being, but me, and nobody, is God, to judge, electrocute and murder you his career, due to typical and normal errors in each one of us.

How many newspapers and the media highlighted the hundreds of donations that the NBA star has made to groups and foundations that help hungry children in the world, elderly people in a state of abandonment, poor people and those who need basic things in life, as Michael Jordan has done? The answer is two out of a hundred, a percentage that says a lot about what a poorly calibrated scale is, led mostly by the horse of envy, of the nail pick, with more desire to remove the negative and cover the positive of the people, simply because one sells more, than the other.

Some Premier League players are afraid to go training because of the COVID-19

Written by: Jose Alvarado S. ( Dj Malanga )

The return of the Premier League is a little further than these days ago, according to information published in the Daily Mail, in which it is assured that great stars of the Premier League have informed their clubs that they are going to refuse to return to training next Monday, for fear of the covid-19 and until the situation is normal.

Beyond the concern that players such as: Sergio Agüero, or Danny Rose have publicly expressed, it seems that the feeling of fear has gone a little further and many footballers of the competition in England, have already reported that on Monday 18, they have no intention of showing up for training, something that will also happen when healthcare entities publish their new healthcare guidelines.

One of the main reasons that have led footballers to adopt this position has been the little that they are taking into account in this negotiation for the return of competitions, something that together with the fear of falling infected and the consequences that they may suffer, have caused them to want to delay the return of the competition.

The soccer players consider that the sanitary control that is offered to them is not enough to guarantee their safety and they do not know how it would be solved, if there were an upturn of positives within the teams.
