World No. 1 player Ashleigh Barty retired from the United States Open today Thursday (July 30) for fear of the coronavirus pandemic in a major blow to the Grand Slam, which is slated to start in New York on 31 of August.

The Australian is the biggest name so far to withdraw from the tournament, with her decision to arrive when the United States marked a grim milestone when her Covid-19 deaths exceeded 150,000.

"My team and I have decided that this year we will not travel to the US for the Western and Southern Open and the US Open," he said in a statement to the Australian media.

"I love both events, so it was a difficult decision, but there are still significant risks due to Covid-19 and I am not comfortable putting my team and myself in that position."

"I wish the USTA all the best for the tournaments and hope to return to the United States next year," he added.
