Charles Schwab Challenge at colonial 2020, returns without Tiger Woods

Written by : Jose Alvarado Sandoval ( DJ Malanga )

Sixteen of the world's top 20 will play Thursday at Colonial Country Club, but Tiger Woods will not be among them.

The 15-time main winner last played on the Tour in February at Riviera and missed the following four tournaments

Tiger Woods and the fans will be missing when golf returns this week after a three-month hiatus due to the novel coronavirus but the Charles Schwab Challenge will otherwise get the full major treatment with a strong field on display.

Led by world number one Rory McIlroy, the world’s top five players and 101 PGA Tour winners will be at the stately Colonial Country Club outside Forth Worth, Texas.

Play starts on Thursday in the first tournament since the Players Championship was halted in mid-March by the pandemic.

But like the conditions surrounding those sports, golfers will be returning to a very different looking arena where social distancing and the results of nasal swabs and thermal scans will be as important as what they put on their scorecards.

The most jarring change will be the absence of galleries that would normally flock to any tournament featuring the world’s best players.

Golf’s biggest name and winner of 15 majors, Woods will be the only noticeable absentee in the elite field as he continues to get his game in shape after recovering from back issues.

Television coverage of the Charles Schwab will be extensive and have all the technological bells and whistles, including a few new features such as Augmented Reality technology virtual signage.

Some golfers will also wear microphones in an effort to liven up a subdued soundtrack.

Whatever technology or viewer-friendly gimmicks are rolled out they will not replace the familiar buzz that resonates across the course when a player holes out or drains a monster putt.

Roger Federer out for rest of 2020 season

Written by : Jose Alvarado Sandoval ( DJ Malanga )

Roger Federer will miss the rest of the 2020 tennis season after undergoing a second knee surgery few weeks ago, the winner of 20 Grand Slam singles titles said on Wednesday (June 10).

The Swiss struggled with injury at the 2020 Australian Open, where he made a semi-final exit to eventual champion Novak Djokovic, and has not played since.

He underwent surgery on the right knee in February but said he needed another procedure after suffering a setback while rehabilitating after the initial operation.

A few weeks ago, having experienced a setback during my initial rehabilitation, I had to have an additional quick arthroscopic procedure on my right knee. I will be missing my fans and the tour dearly but, I will look forward to see everyone back on tour at the start of the 2021 season," the 38-year-old said in a Twitter post.

With professional tennis shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic it remains to be seen how many tournaments Federer will actually miss.

He also had knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus in 2016 and missed the second half of that season.

When he returned to the tour for the 2017 season it looked like he had never been away, winning the Australian Open to end a near five-year Grand Slam title drought and adding the Wimbledon title later that year.

The last of Federer’s record 20 Grand Slam singles titles came at the 2018 Australian Open. The closest he has come since was at Wimbledon last year when he lost in the final.

NBA / Michael Jordan donates $ 100 million to fight racism

Written by : Jose Alvarado Sandoval ( Dj Malanga )

The former NBA player and star, now the owner of the Charlotte Hornets, will donate $ 100 million over the next 10 years to fight racism.

Jordan has announced that he will donate the figure of $ 100 million to the fight against racism. The statement reports that it will give that amount over a decade, and that it will go to organizations "dedicated to guaranteeing racial equality, social justice and greater access to education." From the moment the information was made public, the positive reactions have continued to occur on social networks.

The statement was made in response to the massive demonstrations that have taken place across the United States after the murder of George Floyd, and that have had broad support from the NBA.

Recall that last Tuesday, four policemen from the city of Minneapolis, in the north of the country, were fired as a result of the broadcast of a video in which a white agent is seen for minutes tightening the neck of the detainee, the already mentioned Floyd, who is black, and who later died in hospital.

The action was quickly interpreted as an abuse of authority and a racist crime, something that has sparked a chain reaction across the NBA, in which demands for racialized people have come to light again.

Vitoria SC 2 vs Sportin CP 2 / Portugal Soccer League

Written by : Jose Alvarado Sandoval ( Dj Malanga )

Soccer returned to the Portuguese league, a competition that I enjoy very much from date to date, due to its high level of soccer and the great players who play there.

After the suspension of soccer worldwide, where the Portuguese league was also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, today we enjoyed a great game again, one of several that was played at the same time, between the Victoria teams. SC vs Sportin CP, in a match of emotions, good soccer, with two teams that sought the opposite frame during the 90 minutes.

It was Sporting who would open the scoreboard through the player Sporar, would tie Vitoria SC, through Joao Texeira, Sporting went back to the top on the scoreboard, again through Sporar, tie for Vitoria SC, the player Marcus Edwards , for the definitive 2 x 2, marker with which a disputed and colorful game would end in the return of the professional soccer league in Portugal.

Rafa Nadal says he would not travel to US Open

Written by : Jose Alvarado Sandoval ( Dj Malanga )

Ordinarily, Rafael Nadal would likely be closing in on a 13th French Open title this week. Instead, he is home in Mallorca trying to make sense of a world that feels anything but normal.

Tennis is on hold until at least the start of August because of the coronavirus pandemic, and while there have been positive noises about the prospects of the US Open taking place, followed by the French Open, the Spaniard served a dose of reality.

Speaking via Zoom to tennis media on Thursday (June 4), the day after his 34th birthday, Nadal was asked his thoughts of playing at the US Open, of which he is reigning champion.

"If you asked me today if I want to travel today to New York to play a tennis tournament, I will say: no, I will not," the world No. 2 told reporters. "In a couple of months, I don't know. Hopefully yes.

"We need to wait probably until we have more information about how the virus evolves, how the situation's going to be. New York has been one of the places that has been hit most strongly by the virus."

When tennis returns, it will most likely be without fans.

NBA: Michael Jordan talks about the death of George Floyd

Written by : Jose Alvarado Sandoval ( Dj Malanga )

Basketball star Michael Jordan expressed outrage Sunday (May 31) over the death of George Floyd, an African American killed in Minneapolis where he is watched in a breathless video as a white police officer knelt on his neck, an incident that has sparked protests in more than 27 cities in the United States.

Jordan said his heart was with the family of Floyd and others who died from acts of racism.

"I am deeply saddened, really hurt and just pissed off," said Jordan, who is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and owner of the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association.

"I see and feel everyone's pain, outrage and frustration.

"I am with those who are calling for entrenched racism and violence against people of color in our country. We have had enough."

Jordan's comments came as many U.S. cities prepared for another night of unrest after cleaning streets littered with broken glass and burned cars, as curfews failed to quell confrontations between protesters and police.

Jordan, a six-time NBA champion who was at the heart of the Chicago Bulls dynasty in the 1990s, called on people to show compassion and empathy and never turn their backs on meaningless brutality.

"We need to continue peaceful expressions of injustice and demand accountability," said Jordan. "Our unified voice needs to pressure our leaders to change our laws, or else we need to use our vote to create systemic change."

Fifa calls for 'common sense' as German FA investigates Floyd protests

Written by : Jose Alvarado Sandoval ( Dj Malanga )

Fifa has called on leagues to use "common sense" when deciding whether to discipline footballers for displaying political messages after several players in the German Bundesliga called for justice for George Floyd during matches.

"Fifa fully understands the depth of sentiment and concerns expressed by many footballers in light of the tragic circumstances of the George Floyd case," world football's governing body said in a statement on Tuesday.

After scoring in his team's win at Paderborn on Sunday, Borussia Dortmund's English winger Jadon Sancho lifted his shirt to reveal the message "Justice for George Floyd".

His team-mate Achraf Hakimi and Schalke's American midfielder Weston McKennie expressed similar calls for justice, while Borussia Monchengladbach's French forward Marcus Thuram took a knee after scoring for his team in memory of Floyd.

Floyd died last week after a white policeman in Minneapolis kneeled on the handcuffed man's neck for several minutes. The incident has sparked days of violent protests across the United States.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), the sport's lawmakers, bans players from showing "any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images".

However, pointing to its own anti-racism campaigns, Fifa intimated that no action should necessarily be taken against Sancho, Hakimi or McKennie.

"The application of the laws of the game approved by the IFAB is left for the competitions organisers which should use common sense and have in consideration the context surrounding the events," Fifa said.

The German Football Association (DFB) is investigating the players in line with IFAB's laws, although president Fritz Keller said he understood their actions.
