Stage 20 Giro Italy 2016

Vincenzo Nibali is the winner of the Giro d'Italia. The Shark dynamited the race in La Lombarda, made a brilliant descent and finished Sant'Anna di Vinadio in his big bet that won the game for the Colombian Esteban Chaves, who could not keep up with transalpine. Nibali won his second Giro so and the fourth big round of his resume (he also had a Tour and Vuelta). Alejandro Valverde took the podium in his debut after a final descent daring and brilliant Sant'Anna di Vinadio ascent in which came very close to winning the race. Kruijswijk was fourth.

Nibali put his men to work in La Lombarda. First was Fuglsang who wore Scarponi and then took care of printing a frenetic pace. The Shark was always glued to it. Ahead, on the break, Kangert was picked to join the Astana train and help their leader. A 15 finish, Nibali opened gas and took with him Chaves and Valverde. Kruijswijk was out. He put another gear Nibali and nobody followed him. He galloped towards the rose, especially when he found Kangert, who gave him a hand and a lung. Uran helped Chaves. It was a two for two, but Nibali continued thrown to the top and Chaves desisted. The Colombian Giro was no longer at the top of La Lombarda. On the descent, Alejandro Valverde took to the podium and with a rise Sant'Anna di Vinadio epic his first podium took in the Giro.

Until then little it had happened in the previous two difficulties first. Vars, the break with Brambilla (Etixx), Snow (Sky), Atapuma (BMC), Foliforov (Gazprom), Kangert (Astana), Taaramae (Katusha), Visconti (Movistar) and Dombrowski (Cannondale) was formed. In the following difficulty first, La Bonette, Mikel Snow capped and placed first virtual leader of the mountain. The last Spanish to win this jersey was Juanma Garate. It was the appetizer of the great battle of La Lombarda, where Taaramae, winner in his day Farrapona in La Vuelta, got an ax to the escapees to get first to the top and to the goal of Sant'Anna of Vinadio. It was in the great day of Nibali.

To tail is all bull. And more in the Giro d'Italia with many alternatives as being this. And if not just ask Matteo Trentin, who has given a lesson in cunning in the longest stage of this Giro, the eighteenth, finishing in Pinerolo. The Italian surprised his team mate Brambilla and Moser, who marched escaped and managed to overcome the absence of one hundred meters to the finish line. Duo doubt head allowed him to show all its power and even celebrate the victory a few meters from the finish.

The battle between Brambilla and Moser, two runners of different generations, had been exciting. They fought to exhaustion cycling these two gladiators, who managed to leave their breakaway companions in the only port to try to gamble the stage victory. But when they had everything to win, Trentin made useless their enormous effort and lug them a victory they believed in his hand.

The longest stage of the Giro (244 km) was suitable for getaways. A flat day with a second-class port 20 kilometers from the finish that could also be a place where general are proven again. A very large leak with 24 runners from 15 different teams managed to open a gap of thirteen minutes. Hostilities not arrive until the only mountain pass of the day.

In the large group of cyclists, nobody attacked Kruijswijt, the overall leader, to a significant slope just two kilometers from the finish. It was Alejandro Valverde, but without much faith, which proved it shows that still thinking about the final victory. Friday will have a new opportunity to climb to the roof of the Giro, the dreaded Colle dell'Agenello.
